Mednosis [CAUTION]: In the following case, it would be safer to “Google.”

What is Mednosis?

In the following case, it would be safer to “Google.”

Their board-certified physicians are unaware of the critical difference between glucose (blood sugar) and D-glucose (corn sugar/dextrose).

Corn-allergic patients are currently required to provide the following corn allergy documentation to our clinicians to guarantee our safety, since too many clinicians are falsely equating glucose (blood sugar) with D-glucose (corn sugar/dextrose); even though dextrose-containing IV solutions are contraindicated for administration to corn-allergic patients in the package insert.

Documentation:

"Corn must first be converted to corn sugar (dextrose, the common commercial name for D-glucose) . . ."

The Corn Refiners Association correctly identifies corn-derived sweeteners with the requisite “D-“ modifier (DE for dextrose equivalent).  This critical modifier has been omitted from many published articles over many decades, which is the reason that corn-derived sweeteners are being erroneously equated with blood sugar (glucose).

The FDA also confirms that dextrose is corn sugar/D-glucose.

 Re: Medical Alert Bracelets

This topic has been addressed by the 14.7K members in our corn allergy support groups.  If we declare an allergy to corn on a medical alert bracelet, many clinicians do not connect a corn allergy with dextrose (corn sugar/D-glucose); and if we declare an allergy to dextrose, they may ignore this warning thinking that no one can be allergic to dextrose.  We have received testimonies from our members that many clinicians have falsely claimed that “No one can be allergic to dextrose, since dextrose is naturally present in our bodies.”

Facts:

Glucose (blood sugar) is naturally present in humans, and is produced by the liver.  D-glucose (dextrose/corn sugar) is never naturally present in humans, and is produced from cornstarch.

Since dextrose (corn sugar/D-glucose) is often the carbohydrate-of-choice utilized as a glucose (blood sugar)-elevating agent in some IV solutions, this is the reason these solutions are contraindicated for administration to corn-allergic patients in the package insert.

My Critical Concern with Mednosis, May 12, 2021:

My submission was accepted by Quora and Clinical Research; however it was rejected by Mednosis:

"If a patient has "dextrose" listed as an allergen on a medical alert bracelet, what does that signify?"

[Note: The answer to this question is that it would signify the patient has an allergy to corn.]

Mednosis rejected this submission stating the following reason:

"You can't be allergic to dextrose (glucose)." [emphasis added]

Summary:

Mednosis physicians are falsely equating dextrose (corn sugar/D-glucose) with blood sugar (glucose).  This is the reason the lives of corn-allergic patients remain in constant peril.  There is no excuse for their critical lack of knowledge regarding this subject.

In this particular case, it would be safer to “Google.”

Addendum, May 13, 2021:

Wikipedia warns against citing their articles:

“Wikipedia is not a reliable source for citations elsewhere on Wikipedia. Because it can be edited by anyone at any time, any information it contains at a particular time could be vandalism, a work in progress, or just plain wrong. Edits on Wikipedia that are in error are usually fixed after some time. However, because Wikipedia is a volunteer-run project, it cannot constantly monitor every contribution. There are many errors that remain unnoticed for hours, days, weeks, months, or even years. Therefore, Wikipedia should not be considered a definitive source in and of itself.”

A CRITICAL WIKIPEDIA ERROR:

If "dextrose" (corn sugar/D-glucose) is referenced on Wikipedia, the reader is erroneously redirected to "glucose" (blood sugar).  I was banned from my Wikipedia talk page for providing indisputable documentation that the only source of dextrose is corn; and, therefore, must never be equated with glucose (blood sugar naturally present in all living organisms). They also rejected my proposed “Dextrose” page. It appears that the false narrative of equating dextrose (corn sugar/D-glucose) with glucose (blood sugar) is being controlled by a special-interest entity.
